Brushing Your Dog’s Teeth

March 4 2022

Did you know that brushing Fido’s teeth is one of the best things you can do to keep his choppers in good health? Dental care is just as important to dogs as it is for people. Of course, our canine friends can’t really care for their own teeth, so it’s up to us to handle this for them. A Clinton, UT vet offers some advice on brushing your pup’s teeth in this article.

Start Young

It’s always best to get Fido used to things when he’s young. If possible, start your furry pal’s training when he is still a puppy.

Sneak It In

Don’t make too big a deal out of brushing your pup’s teeth. Start by just gently rubbing your pet’s teeth and gums. Work this into one of your regular doggy cuddle sessions. That will help Fido form a positive association with getting his teeth cleaned.

Make It Yummy

Once your canine pal has gotten used to having his teeth touched, you’ll want to incorporate toothpaste. Be sure to only use products made for dogs! Pick a flavored toothpaste to sweeten the deal a bit.

Ramp Up Slowly

Once Fido has gotten used to having his teeth handled, and has decided that toothpaste tastes good, start using a doggy toothbrush. You can also use gauze or a finger toothbrush.

Start A Routine

Our canine companions tend to do really well on set schedules. Brush your furry friend’s teeth at roughly the same time every night.

Reward The Pooch

Always give Fido praise and treats after handling his teeth. Giving him food just after you cleaned his teeth may seem counter-productive, but it can really help keep him on board with the idea.

Rotate

You don’t have to clean all of your furry buddy’s teeth every single night. Do one segment at a time, and keep rotating. This will make things easier on you and Fido, as it will minimize the time you spend on this task every night.

Don’t Force It

This isn’t a hill you want to die on, figuratively speaking. If Fido isn’t having it, don’t force the issue. Instead, ask your vet about other options. Dental-formula treats and chews can help quite a bit. Oral flakes and rinses are also beneficial.
