Leave your puppy with his mother until he is 8 weeks oldĀ We know, we know. Your puppy is so cute and you want to bring him home right away. But, you need to leave your puppy with the litter and his mother until he is 8 weeks old. 30% of pets taken from their litter younger than 8 weeks old have behavior problems! These puppies are not getting the chance to learn how much to bite and play. They are not experiencing biting mom or a sibling and hearing a yelp. That yelp teaches them to take it easy, to not bite. When we take puppies home and they bite at us, we naturally smack them on the nose. This is totally the wrong reaction! Hitting puppies in the face teaches them to fear the human hand and they will bite it to protect themselves. (When your puppy bites you should say OUCH loudly and pull your hand away). Although there is no law in Utah requiring puppies to stay with their litter until they are 8 weeks old, states with this law have reduced their shelter population of 10 month to 2 year old dogs by nearly 30%. Wait to bring your puppy home and give them and you a better chance at a successful lifetime together.
